Setting up conditions can make your forms smarter by showing or hiding questions based on a user's answers. This guide will walk you through how to set them up step-by-step.

What is a Condition?

A condition determines when a question, field, or even an entire page appears on your form.

For example, you might have a question that asks, "Do you have a pet?" If the user answers "Yes," a new question could appear that says, "What kind of pet do you have?" If they answer "No," the form continues to the next main question.

This ensures your users only see questions that are relevant to them.

How to Set a Condition

Setting a condition is done within the form builder.

Step 1: Find the Conditions Section

When you select an existing field or add a new one, you'll see an option to set conditions. This is where you'll begin.

Step 2: Add Your Condition

Click "Add some conditions" to open the condition builder. This will display three main fields:

  • Left Field (Form Field): A dropdown menu of all the questions in your form. You will select the question that the condition depends on.

  • Middle Field (Operator): A dropdown menu to define the relationship between the question and the answer (e.g., "equals," "does not equal," "is greater than").

  • Right Field (Value): The specific answer or value that the condition is looking for (e.g., "Yes," "No," "5").

Step 3: Define Your Logic

Let's use an example to walk through setting a condition.

Example: You want a question called "Describe the fire" to appear only if a user answers "Yes" to the question "Will there be a fire on the premises?"

  1. Select a field: From the left dropdown menu, choose "Will there be a fire on the premises?"

  2. Set the operator: In the middle dropdown, choose "equals." This tells the form to check for an exact match.

  3. Enter the value: In the right field, type "Yes."

Important Tip for Accuracy

Make sure the value you type in the right field is an exact match to the answer option in your form. Any extra spaces, incorrect capitalization, or different spelling will prevent the condition from working. The safest way to do this is to copy and paste the answer directly from the form.

Using "Any" vs. "All" Conditions

At the top of the condition builder, you'll find an option to select "Any" or "All."

  • "Any" means the field will appear if at least one of the conditions you've set is met. (ex. you want a field or fee to show up if the applicant selects Red OR Yellow as their favorite color).

  • "All" means the field will only appear if every single condition you've set is met. This is used for more complicated conditions. For instance if you need a fee to show if an applicant selects a project type of Accessory Building AND inputs a square footage of 400 or less.

Step 4: Save and Test

Once you've set up your condition, be sure to click "Add" and then "Save changes."

Finally, test your form to make sure the condition works as expected.
