Understanding Default and Secondary Organizations

When you need to complete a review but the review box isn't showing up, it's usually because you are in the wrong organization. This guide explains how to navigate between different organizations in Civic Review and ensure you're always working in the correct one.


Switching Organizations

Civic Review allows users to manage permits and applications for different organizations (e.g., Utilities, Community Development). If you're added as a user to multiple organizations, you can easily switch between them.

  1. Locate the Organization Name: Look for the organization name displayed in the top-left corner of the screen.

  2. Click to Switch: Click the name to open a dropdown menu.

  3. Select Your Organization: Choose the correct organization from the list.

The organization you select becomes your default organization, and all actions you take, such as completing a review, will apply to it.

Default vs. Secondary Organizations

  • Default Organization: This is the organization you are actively working in. Any new forms, users, or changes you make are applied to this organization. If you go to review a permit and the review box is missing, you are most likely in the wrong default organization. You need to switch to the organization that owns that permit.

  • Secondary Organization: This is an organization that is not your current default. This happens when you open a permit from a different organization while your default is still active. This often occurs when you follow an email link to a permit or have multiple tabs open.

Benefits of Secondary Organizations

Even though the review box may not be visible, you can view permit details within a secondary organization. This allows for you to view the license or project quickly without having to switch your default organization.

However, any application changes (like leaving a comment, reviewing, or adding fees) must be completed within the default organization, not a secondary one.

Workaround for Editing in Multiple Organizations

If you need to both view and edit data for two organizations at the same time, you'll need two active sessions.

Simply open the other organization in a separate browser window or a private/incognito tab. This creates a new session, allowing you to have two independent default organizations running concurrently.
